Jo Hyun-jae talks about army life

Here are a few recently released photos of actor Jo Hyun-jae (Three Dads, One Mom), currently serving since his enlistment last August.

Usually we’ll see a celebrity head off for military service and not hear about him until his discharge two years later. Every so often, you’ll get some news about celebs currently still serving (e.g., Gong Yoo, Lee Jung, Jae Hee). These photos were posted on army blog Army Nuri, which included an interview with the actor.

Jo Hyun-jae described some of his duties; aside from receiving basic training and education, he goes on night patrols and keeps guard over ammunition. He admits that he still finds these patrols difficult: “I stand night patrol every night, without fail. When it’s winter, I go out every morning at 4am to patrol and inspect the ammunition. The patrol is 5.5 km every day.”

Unlike many entertainers, Jo is not stationed in the entertainers’ unit. He gave the reason, “My parents didn’t like the idea, and I thought it would be a good idea to go into active duty. While I was a civilian, I was too concerned only with my own things and didn’t rest because I was focused on working, but I felt that being in active service would give me the opportunity to be introspective and take a look at myself.”

He added, “A lot of fellow entertainers have not yet done their military service, but I’d like to tell them, ‘Enlist as soon as possible. Don’t be afraid, and when you experience it firsthand, you start thinking that army life is something anybody can manage.’”

Manabu Oshio finally admits he was aware of drugs

In the ongoing investigation of the Manabu Oshio drug case, Oshio has once again changed his testimony. This time, he finally admitted that he knew that the pills he took were illegal, contradicting his previous claims.

Oshio was arrested earlier this month after police found a woman dead in a luxury apartment. Oshio had been with the woman prior to her death, and it was confirmed that the two had both taken some amount of MDMA (ecstasy).

Immediately after his arrest, Oshio stated that he took a pill that he received from a friend. He later amended his statement and said that the woman had offered it to him. Since the start, he had claimed that he was unaware that the substance he took was illegal, but he has now admitted that he knew all along. Police are still investigating his dubious claim that the woman provided him with the drugs.

Meanwhile, the latest issue of FRIDAY contained an article saying that Oshio had previously used drugs overseas. The magazine interviewed a woman who reportedly met Oshio while working as a hostess at another Tokyo club. She visited Oshio while he was in the U.S. for work, and at his hotel he offered her ecstasy before they had sex. This continued for several days, and she said that she even passed out at one point due to the drugs. If true, her story suggests that Oshio had his own supply of the drug and used it heavily.

"Hantsuki" movie cast unveiled

The main cast members of director Yoshihiro Fukagawa's "Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora" have been revealed. Actor Sosuke Ikematsu (19) has the starring role, while actress Shiori Kutsuna (16) plays the heroine.

The movie is adapted from Tsumugu Hashimoto's light novel series of the same name, sometimes abbreviated as "Hantsuki." The story tells the romance between two young patients hospitalized for serious illnesses. Ikematsu plays a simple boy named Yuichi who has hepatitis A, while Kutsuna plays a girl named Rika with an incurable heart problem (explained as a weak heart valve in the novel). Yo Oizumi (36) has been cast as a doctor at the hospital.

Filming already ended in June, though the movie will not hit theaters until next spring. The theme song is being sung by Mao Abe and is titled "15 no Kotoba."

AKB48, Nippon Ham Fighters among latest flu cases

Newspapers are reporting that the H1N1 influenza virus has reached epidemic level in Japan. Although some cases have been identified as typical flu infections, it is suspected that most of the current flu cases are of the H1N1 strain. Health concerns became especially heightened this past week, as Japan witnessed its first few swine flu deaths.

Naturally, the entertainment industry has not been able to avoid the flu. Among those infected are Maximum the Hormone vocalist Ryo Kawakita (reported last week) and actor Takeru Sato, though only the former was identified as having the H1N1 strain. This week, several more cases were publicly reported, including members of baseball team Nippon Ham Fighters and idol group AKB48.

Four players and one coach for the Nippon Ham Fighters were diagnosed with influenza A, with two of them being the H1N1 strain. The five of them have been placed in isolation.

Six AKB48 members have been sidelined - Team K's Manami Oku and Asuka Kuramochi, Team B's Aika Ohta and Haruka Kohara, and kenkyuusei members Haruka Ishida and Sumire Sato. They have all been diagnosed with influenza A, though it has not been said whether any of them are H1N1 cases. As a result, they will not participate in an AKB48 event at the Nippon Budokan this weekend.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong's entertainment industry was also recently hit, as singer Stephy Tang was confirmed to be infected with the H1N1 virus.

B2ST New Boyband,Profiles

Nothing builds better hype and fanbase than an idol group documentary.

POPSEOUL! has neglected to mention the upcoming debut for new boy group, B2ST (Boys 2 Search for Top), for some time until something more tangible came out, and indeed, it finally has~

Cube Entertainment’s boy group, B2ST, is set to debut this September, but in the meantime, you gotta get the girls ready to scream for these boys. Best way to do that? Let them watch these boys give their blood, sweat, and tears while preparing and training for their debut. Therefore, an MTV documentary is scheduled to begin airing on August 23rd, showcasing B2ST’s journey.

Following the photo below, B2ST is composed of Yoon Doo-joon (One Day reject/candidate from Mnet’s ”Hot Blood” documentary), Yong Jun-hyung (aka Poppin’ Dragon and former member of Xing), Lee Ki-kwang (better known as “Dancing Shoes AJ), Son Dong-woon (maknae-in-training), Yang Yo-seob (trainee and AJ’s back-up dancer), and finally, Jang Hyun-seung (aka So-1 from Big Bang documentary days).

I really feel like this is a kick in the pants for AJ because he did make a fairly notable debut, but now he has to take a few steps back and become part of a package deal. Cube seems to be scrapping the barrel for this group as three of the members just couldn’t quite make it in their previous projects. Although with their past exposure, B2ST has a lot of anticipation surrounding them from Korean netizens.

I am moderately excited for their coming after the overdose of estrogen this summer, who doesn’t like fresh male blood? Their group name could have been something more creative though. Companies seem to be carrying the SMS trend too far with these numerics and acronyms. I don’t completely object to the name B2ST, but when I see it, I think “second best” more than anything.

Chae Yeon shakes it with her mom

Looks like her mom can keep up!

Chae Yeon and her mother appeared on a recent episode of the SBS variety program “Star Junior Show“. The episode, which aired on August 22nd, featured stars like Lee Min-woo, Lee Ji-hye and 2AM’s Jo-kwon and their mothers.

During the broadcast, Chae Yeon revealed that one of her biggest regrets as a celebrity was not being able to visit the public baths with her mother because of her sexy star image. According to Chae Yeon, whenever her mother returns from visiting the public baths alone she feels “unfilial” and “guilty”.

At another point during the episode, Chae Yeon’s mother read a very touching letter to her daughter, causing the singer to break down in tears on camera. To end the program, the mother-daughter duo performed to Chae Yeon’s song “Shake“. Sounds like some good mother-daughter bonding time to me!

Here’s a clip from the episode featuring stars like Chae Yeon their mothers~

Lee Hyori Crying

Find out what brought the diva to tears.

Singer Lee Hyori is currently a judge on “Superstar K“, Mnet’s national talent search program. During the program’s second day of judging, the singer was so touched by a blind contestant’s performance that she broke down in tears.

On the day of the performance, the program’s remaining 40 contestants were placed into groups of five and asked to perform together. It was during this set of performances that Kim Kook-hwan, a blind man, praised his group mates for their support. Due of his disability, the group was unable to perform a flashy song and dance number, a choice that could have hindered their chances to advance. Instead, they chose a ballad and it seems their sacrifice made a big impression.

In the middle of the group’s performance of 8Eight’s “Without a Heart“, Lee Hyori was so touched that she began to cry and, honestly, who can blame her? After watching the performance, I got shivers too.

Here’s a clip of the tear-jerking performance~
